Welcome to my second blog post covering my manager Van Skidder’s journey in management starting in the German third tier (3.Liga) with TSV 1860 München.
Changing The System
So I set out to implement a 442 system and that is exactly what I did however after a reasonable good start I was never fully confident in the way the system was playing out and after a miserable December that saw us lose 4 games on the bounce I ripped the script up and built a 4231 system
You can see from the above graphic that the 442 started pretty well in terms of returning positive results but the way we were getting the results was not how I wanted the side to play but I persevered until the final straw losing all our games in December.
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit I got it wrong and that is exactly what I did, to be honest I was thinking if I don’t do something quick to change our fortunes I could well be looking for a vacancy to open up at another club because the board are not going to give me a lot of time being a new manager it would not cost them much to wield the axe.
I sat down one afternoon with notebook on hand and a good old cuppa tea and started to pen out what I want to achieve on the field. What floats my boat when I watch a game of football? The answer is simple Juego de Posicion (Positional Play) ala Bielsa and Guardiola but I am not here to replicate managers past or present so I wrote down what I like to see when I am watching a game.
- Short Passing
- Play out from the back
- Counter Pressing
Simple hey, so let’s give it a whirl which is when I came up with the above system.
Below in the two videos you can see how the system works. It’s not perfect and there is definitely some Risk v Reward involved however the football it’s producing is for me a joy to watch.
3.Liga Duisburg v TSV 1860 Munchen
Our form and definitely the type of football that we are now playing is a big improvement on the first half of the season with the team playing my style of football. We picked up some excellent victories beating the top of the table teams Ingolstadt 4-0 and Duisburg 5-0 which most definitely carried us to a point that with 8 games to go we were in with a chance of promotion and even winning the League however with 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats we bottled it if not for a better description we ran out of steam.
3.Liga Final Table 20/21
A 5th placed finish in our first season and now the foundations have been lay and although the board are happy with just a mid table finish next season I am looking for us to be in the top 3 come the end of next season.
The fans player of the year Stephen Salger lead the way in average ratings with a average of 7.30. Salger was a key figure in our season showing craft and guile when called upon. Key player Dennis Dressel lead the way with 8 assists and 6 goals from his central midfield position.
On the goalscoring front our goals were spread about through the squad but forward / target man Sascha Molders came out on top with 13 ahead of winger Stephen Lex who bagged 8 ahead of both Fabian Greilinger (shadow striker) and Martin Pusic (Target Man) both with 7 goals.
Youth Team Round Up
A great season for our Under 19 squad winning promotion to the top level youth zone by becoming the Bavaria League Champions. Then to put the icing on the cake we only went on to complete the double by winning the German Youth Cup.
Winger Anian Brõnauer was the Youth teams top goalscorer scoring 42 goals ahead of Valdrin Konjuhi who bagged 35 goals.
The youth intake provided us with some half decent talent with Paulo Linzinho being singled out to be our top prospect which is interesting because the German Forward comes with roots in Chesterfield, England.
A first season at the club comes to an end and on reflection it’s not been too bad a season with plenty of positives including being the 3.Liga leaders in the following categories least shots conceded, most shots on target, most goals scored and least goals conceded. Not bad in my books but I will strive to better this season over the course of the new season. With 1 more year on my contract I will be looking for us to meet our objectives or else I will be looking for another job…… I have decided that this will be my only save on FM21 so I may move to another club or clubs but it will be in this save only meaning it could become a bit of a journeyman save depending how the save develops over the course of FM21 building a CV for Van Skidders.
